JESS seminar, Engineering Solutions to Radioactive Contamination, 12 p.m., East Auditorium

Seminar, "Engineering Solutions to Radioactive Contamination," presented by Bruce Carpenter with Vista Engineering.

The Joint Engineering and Science Seminar (JESS) series is an interdisciplinary effort of the College of Arts and Sciences and the Office of Professional Programs at WSU Tri-Cities. Admission is free and open to the public; graduate students, post-docs and professionals are especially encouraged to attend.

Through the production of nuclear research weapons production and power, facilities become contaminated through either operations or natural disasters. Vista Engineering Technologies provides the engineering knowledge to develop designs and equipment for the evaluation and clean-up of contaminated sites. Through over 60 years of research and weapons development, an infrastructure to transport and consolidate contaminated liquids in the 300 area at Hanford was created. Large facilities, including test reactors were also built and operated. With the cessation of work in the 300 area, these facilities must be removed. Major natural events can also create unplanned releases of radioactive materials. The March 11th earthquake at Fukushima has resulted in one of the worst, on-going radioactive contamination issues in history. Using robotic systems provides safe methods to evaluate the facility to determine the extent of damage to the reactors. Two current projects will be presented demonstrating the application of engineering designs and solutions to these highly contaminated locations.

Bruce Carpenter is a licensed civil engineer with more than 25 year experience in the nuclear industry. He earned his BS in Architectural Engineering from the University of Colorado and his MS in Civil Engineering from Stanford University. He is currently the Chief Engineer and Design and Analysis Business Area Manager for Vista Engineering Technologies in Richland, WA.
