Why: Here is information from the teacher, Rashad Lathan

In researching science technology engineering and math (STEM) I came across a program that is called the Soap Box Derby. The idea behind the unit is that students’ knowledge of science, technology, engineering and math would grow in relation to racing.

Every semester, MESA students at McLoughlin have this opportunity to participate in this unit. This year, Jorge Moreno (MESA Interim Director at WSU Tri-Cities) asked Dale Ingram from LIGO to come to McLoughlin and discuss friction.

During his presentation, Dale helped students to understand how friction can help and hinder race car drivers through a variety of presentations and labs. Students then took that knowledge and used the engineering design process to reengineer their cart so that their carts would increase in speed using this knowledge.

Students who participate in this unit increase their engineering knowledge and they gain knowledge in tool use and real racing. All of this is made possible by MESA’s generous funding for this program.
