Strategic Plan (2007-2012)


Vision
Washington State University Tri-Cities provides world-class undergraduate and graduate education. It is the institution of choice for residents of Southeastern Washington and offers programs of distinction that attract faculty and students from the region and around the world. WSU Tri-Cities is known for strong student-centered learning and a focus on experiential learning which prepares students to effectively live and work in a global society.


Mission

Legislative action in 2006 expanded the mission of WSU Tri-Cities from an upper division and graduate institution to a four-year campus, and freshmen were admitted for the first time in fall 2007. Washington State University Tri-Cities, as one of four campuses of Washington State University, offers world-class, face-to-face undergraduate and graduate education, with faculty, staff, and students conducting research and providing outreach and community service commensurate with the University's land-grant mission.

Goals

I. Provide World Class Undergraduate and Graduate Education Opportunities.


A. Develop academic offerings and support services to implement four-year expansion.

B. Provide relevant programs and services to support student success.

C. Develop destination programs in Viticulture and Enology, Math and Science Teacher Education, and Bio-products disciplines.

D. Ensure the strength of existing academic programs.

1. Increase the number of resident faculty, while retaining an appropriate blend of   highly qualified adjunct faculty.
  
2. Expand the Bridges (Coordinated Bachelor’s Degree) Program and extend it to other community colleges in the region.

3. Increase the number of four-year undergraduate degree programs that include lower division courses.

4. Evaluate and modify or eliminate historically under-enrolled/under-performing programs.

E. Expand academic options to meet national, regional and state needs.

1. Add selected undergraduate and graduate degrees programs, including doctoral programs.

2. Add selected minors and majors.

3. Develop certification programs.

II. Nurture a World Class Environment for Research, Scholarship, Outreach, and the Arts.

A. Expand and strengthen research programs.

1. Develop multidisciplinary centers of research excellence in areas aligned with the needs of the region and the state.

2. Increase grant and contract funding levels of resident faculty.

3. Enhance infrastructure for research on and near campus.

4. Increase the number of full-time graduate students supported by research and teaching assistantships.

5. Establish strategic research and outreach linkages with WSU Extension.

B. Establish research partnerships with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and other entities.

1. Co-locate WSU, PNNL and other researchers in state-of-the-art facilities.

2. Develop shared faculty/staff appointments, matching instructional needs with researchers’ areas of expertise.

C. Engage the community through outreach efforts.

D. Enhance and develop cultural programming in the arts in partnership with the community.

E. Ensure ongoing development of campus facilities and infrastructure to support current and emerging needs.

III. Recruit and retain a diverse faculty, staff, and student body.


A. Enhance initiatives for recruitment of members of under-represented groups.

B. Develop aggressive multicultural community outreach programs.

IV. Increase Community Awareness of WSU Tri-Cities.


A. Expand community outreach activities.

1. Expand the number of student internships and service learning experiences.

2. Offer selected professional education and life-long learning programs.

3. Increase faculty and staff involvement in local and regional advisory committees and boards.

4. Enhance faculty and student involvement in activities that contribute to sustainable economic, community, and cultural developments of the region.

5. Increase the quality and quantity of community and campus sponsored events on campus.

B. Promote and market the campus and its programs throughout the region
