Masters in Teaching with Elementary Certification
Program Background
The Master in Teaching (MIT) with Elementary Certification program provides a master’s degree while fulfilling the requirements for Washington State K-8 teaching certification. The program is a non-thesis educational master’s degree that comprises five to six semesters of study (including summers) and includes 12 semester credits of practicum experience in elementary and middle school classrooms.
The College of Education admits students every other year to the MIT program. The next cohort is anticipated to start in Fall 2009. The deadline for application is March 1, 2009. Accepted candidates will be notified by May. Classes begin in August.
Multicultural Education
Program courses take advantage of the strengths and special conditions present in the Tri-Cities. Coursework and practice teaching experience emphasize skills and knowledge critical for today’s culturally diverse classrooms.
Literacy
Courses focus on strategies, authentic assessment, and social conditions. An understanding of both theory and practice is necessary to teach language effectively. Knowledge of classroom content is based on why particular materials are more successful with some children than others.
Prospective teachers will develop the philosophies and skills necessary to help children become literate, with a love for reading, writing, and learning.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR ALL MIT APPLICANTS
It is the desire of the College of Education, as well as the State of Washington, to prepare the best possible teachers. Thus, we reserve the right to seek the most highly qualified individuals for admission to the program. Simply meeting the application requirements does not guarantee admission to the program.
Before certification is granted, teacher candidates must pass the WEST-E subject area test. The test must be passed before student teaching. Students who will earn certification after August 31, 2009 will be required to take the new version of the WEST-E, which will be released in fall 2008.
Students are required to obtain clearance from the Washington State Patrol and the FBI before being awarded a residency certificate. This clearance is obtained by means of a fingerprint check and completed forms regarding moral character at the start and end of the student program. Below you will find all the conditions which would automatically prohibit you from being awarded a teaching certificate in the state of Washington.
